Happy Tuesday.
You know what makes me sad?
Podcast video titles.
Lemme tell ya why.
I have a podcast for you today. It’s a beauty (I think).
I needed to attach a title to it because that’s a law in podcastland.
I really wish I had unlimited characters and could give you a full brief about what’s in store for you when you click that link.
The title I chose was Job Search Obstacles Preventing You from Success.
It is accurate. Technically.
What I share is an obstacle that prevents you from getting everything you want out of your job search.
What I really wanted to title it was…
Andy’s Surefire Method to Show You How Awesome You Are and How Much Meaning Your Life Has and How If You Look at the World This Way You Will Never Have a Sad Day for the Rest of Your Life.
That’s really what the video is about.
Yes, I have a fabulous story about job searching and Susan and how I transformed her interpretation of an assignment she had developing a spreadsheet.
To her, she thought her work activity sounded mundane.
To me, it sounded like she did something important that helped (literally) thousands of music artists get accurately paid (literally again) millions of dollars they were not properly receiving on time or at all.
Not to be fussy, but I liked my interpretation a wee bit better.
Maybe you walk through life this way…thinking you don’t matter much?
Or, thinking what you do doesn’t matter much?
Here, please try on my sweet rose-colored glasses so you can see what I see…

“An object in motion is easier to redirect than a stationary one.”
I’m sure I made up that quote sometime in my teens during one of my endless semesters of physics.
I’m sure I’m not the first person to have that thought.
I’m also sure it’s the end of the year.
That means many job-seekers are either tired of searching or hesitating or reluctant to get moving until the new year.
I just can’t have that, so I want to continue my little run of job-search-motivation to help with your momentum.
Today, I’m serving up an analogy from my life to help you get charged, maintain your focus, not worry about the future, and a bunch of other really cool messages I managed to stuff into 309 seconds.
For the rest of your life, remember…
When you’re doing something, focus on the shout.
When you’re reflecting, focus on the echo.
When you make a mistake, make it an error of commission not omission.
And, for the love of all that is holy, whenever you’re not sure, hit the damn send button and sort it out later.
It’s really the “sorting” you’re working for…

I know job searching stinks.
But, it’s a gift.
You don’t need to agree with me at this moment.
I know, however, someday, you will look back and know exactly why it had to happen THAT way.
Until you know the answer to that previous statement, I have something to tide you over.
It’s a life lesson, job searching, and a bunch of other things all rolled into 8 minutes and 6 seconds—all aimed at helping you avoid fatigue and gain the benefits from this experience.
The process I’m sharing with you today changed my life.
It helps me to enjoy every single day.
I hope it’s magical for you too…

That is certainly one way to look at it.
Not the only way of course.
What happened?
Any of a number of things.
What can you do?
Any of a number of things.
First thing, take a step. Consider the possibilities. Then, go.

Expected salary is ridiculous.
Budgeted salary…sillier still.
Just like advertised salary, unadvertised salary, and the-salary-we-hope-to-pay salary.
How do I know this?
Let’s see...
Negotiated over 600 employment agreements and salaries as an executive recruiter.
Wait. There’s more.
Of the more-than 3,000 people I’ve personally coached as an international career coach, I’ll estimate, conservatively, 25% of them needed negotiation help.
That’s…let me carry the…wait, is that grouping, carrying, or borrowing now?
Either way, roughly 750 more.
Can we agree on over 1,000 data points (even though it’s over 1,300)?
Cool.
Let’s say, for the sake of email argument, you’ll play along.
Why do we even have budgeted salaries?
Why ask about expected salaries?
Well, companies and people think this saves time.
I think it helps you miss opportunities as an employer or employee.
What should YOU do instead of focusing on these expectations when you enter an interview process as a job candidate?
Learn the 5 most important variables at play when it comes to pay…

Salary negotiation is tough stuff. Let's keep this simple. Here's a breakdown of the questions I answered and exactly when I answered them. Enjoy!
00:00:41 How to fill in salary expectation in the ATS (online job application)?
00:03:10 How to answer a recruiter who keeps pushing for an expected salary number?
00:06:30 What to tell a recruiter who's asking what my rate was for a job description?
00:07:33 How to handle when the salary I'm currently making is above the range they're willing to pay?
00:14:10 I have 10 yrs experience in my field, but the salary offered is less than someone in fast food. How do I convey to the recruiter my experience is worth more?
00:18:12 What if a job has a salary range posted in the application, but you want to negotiate for more?
00:22:51 Recruiters are negotiating a lot lower salary. What should I do since I've been underpaid?
00:24:22 What's the best way to negotiate if you're coming off a layoff?
00:26:48 When companies hire you, they gain your expertise, shouldn't vacation time be commensurate with the level of position, just like salary?
00:28:21 I just passed on a job where the salary was non-negotiable
00:29:48 When considering contract vs. full-time roles vs contract-to-perm, how do you approach salary negotiation? Transfer from contingent worker to employer?
00:35:15 I interviewed for a sales job and the job that was offered is solution creation and management. How to negotiate salary?
00:39:30 How you negotiate via a recruiter who speaks for the company?
00:42:36 Can an hourly wage be negotiated?
00:45:13 I've reached out to small companies I want to help grow. When should I let them know I'm open to max pay later?
00:46:47 How to negotiate for commission and expenses?
00:50:23 What to do when offer is lower than advertised?
00:54:37 How to determine target salary to negotiate after the offer?
00:59:01 Can my Phd be used to negotiate more salary?
01:00:36 What is a reasonable amount of time to respond to an offer?
01:04:06 Should I negotiate for an entry-level job?

Sometimes you (think you’ve) hit a wall.
There’s a person you’re speaking to and they just don’t want to pay you any more salary.
Before you come to my Live Office Hours show and ask me what to do, I want you to ask yourself a question…
“Can this person actually approve more compensation for me?”
Essentially, is this someone who can say “No,” but cannot say “Yes?”
If it is, don’t argue.
It’s time for something else.
Like a great prizefighter, let’s hit them with a left jab so they need some smelling salt from their trainer.
I’ll stop with the boxer jokes now because, after all, we don’t want to hurt anyone. At least not yet. Ha ha.
What you (actually) need to determine is whether they can and will run it up the flagpole so to speak.
This might be a recruiter or HR person turning to a hiring official to make a decision.
It might be the hiring officially turning to a more senior executive.
Effectively, I want you to test whether you’ll hit an actual wall or whether there’s a bit more dough stuffed in the mattress.
Listen to learn how.

I’ve seen a lot of unhappy people in my day.
Some happy ones of course. Some. Not enough.
I’ll add to my pile a boat-load of indifferent people.
These round-about numbers make me sad.
If you’re indifferent or unhappy, I’d like to help you get happy.
Let’s do that in today’s talk.
That’s what today’s lesson is. A little talk.
It’s not an 8-stepper where you do this and do this and do this and then, voilà, you’re getting paid twice what you were yesterday.
It’s a heart-to-heart where I want to point out three areas (two good, one bad) that I want you to be on high-alert for when evaluating a new job.
This can be a job with a new employer.
It can be an internal transfer.
It can be a career change.
This “rule” can be universally applied.
Just make sure to only accept a new job if it meets these two requirements and you’ll likely be happy.

Your resume is a marketing document, not a work history document.
Yes, you use your work history to market yourself, but 99.9% of the people I’ve encountered do it the wrong way.
In my work history, for example, I’ve helped companies earn likely billions of dollars. I’ve built project management methodologies. I’ve built enough tools for 10 lifetimes.
Do you can about any of that when it comes to helping you find your dream job?
I can create a resume that’s 100,000 words and 99,400 of them wouldn’t do anything but hide the 600 that matter—TO YOU!
It’s all my work history and I’m proud of it, but it’s not important as it relates to you and what you need at this moment so I’m not gonna waste your time with that.
Employers aren’t companies. They’re a bunch of people with personal and corporate needs.
The biggest mistake job seekers make is not obsessing over what the employer’s need and putting that information front and center for them.
They need to see the right CONTENT with the right CONTEXT in the right SEQUENCE.
This is difficult for so many reasons, but the killer is the main culprit is job seekers don’t take the time upfront to consider the employers before they consider themselves.
Lucky for you, you career mediator thinks of both of you (even if what I care about most is helping you get a great job with a great payday).
Inside today’s podcast on Resume Revolution: Resume Writing Tips and AI Tricks That Elevate Your Resume, I take a deep dive on how to:
· Determine which information to put in your resume for max power.
· Entice the employers to want to interview you.
· Translate the information on your resume to interview stories.
· Use AI (ChatGPT) to really punch up all this stuff.
It’s like the quadruple header of resume hits all wrapped up into one snazzy tutorial.
That’s why it’s a lofty 43:21.
Grab a coffee or a cocktail or whatever’s your pleasure. It’s a doozy!

If you’ve ever been fired or laid off or let go from your job for any reason, it’s dreadful to explain when interviewing for a new job.
Don’t fret.
Your career happiness expert is here today with answers.
Oh, I have more than just answers!
I have techniques for any time you’re in “explanation mode” in an interview.
I call it “defense mode” because you’re trying to clarify something you don’t want to be clarifying.
What’s worse, you’re not on offense—as in selling yourself!
When you’re in defense mode, the best you can hope for is to not lose interviewing “points.”
That means, you need to get this over with as quickly as possible so you can start scoring points.
Join me for the best way to explain your layoff in a job interview to learn these masterful techniques!

I’m an open-minded person.
BUT, if you want to convince me there is any faster route to getting a job interview, and ultimately an offer, other than boss hunting, you better come armed.
It makes no difference whether you’re a recent college graduate like Venkata (the hero in today’s lesson) or a seasoned pro.
Top to bottom and every which way in between, targeting bosses is your best route to surfacing interviews.
If you’re wondering why, just think about it.
Who is more in pain that you’re not on their team?
The recruiter? I think not.
The Applicant Trashing System? I’ll wait for the deafening silence. Oh. There it is.
Bosses are ALWAYS looking for great talent, whether they have budgeted openings or whether they’d trade out someone on their team for you.
Today, I’m covering my favorite job searching approach equipped with templates and real-life samples from successful job seekers.
Listen to Get Your New Job Fast by Boss Hunting (Plus Recent College Graduate Examples) so you start surfacing those interviews!

Do you realize whenever you’re interviewing with a company, you’ll have FAR BETTER results when you treat every interaction as if you’re already a team?
What do teams do?
They work together to achieve a common goal.
From the first screening interview all the way to your salary counteroffer, you’ll be amazed at what manifests when you approach it this way.
Now, sometimes, you’re interviewing and you’re not quite clear what the goal is. They might not be clear either.
But, you know you like each other enough to start dancing even though you don’t know all the steps.
Maybe, they say, “Hey, we like your background. Don’t have an open role. But, let’s get together and see where it goes.”
Perhaps, they say, “Come on down and interview for this role. We don’t have a description, but it’s general engineer-y stuff.”
It could even be, “We’re thinking about hiring someone to build out this area. We don’t have a job description yet because it’s a new position. Wanna talk?”
Whatever the scenario, I have the formula for exactly what you can do to win the day.
My formula has a bunch of stuff I want you to do and at least three things I do not want you to do…
DO NOT tell them what you’ve done.
DO NOT tell them what you can do.
And for the love of all that is holy, DO NOT tell them what you want.
There is a better way to get what YOU want and help the company get max value from you.

Ever have trouble remembering your job interview answers?
Actually, my real question to you is, “Why are you trying to remember your job interview answers?”
My mind is like a steel trap and I’d never consider trying to remember all the words it takes to give you a (live-show) lesson.
That’s just too much stuff.
Not to mention, if I memorized it, I’d sound robotic instead of my cheery self!
There is a better way to answer questions in an interview.
It doesn’t require much other than remembering a few points.

Today, sweet podcast on THE job interview tactic that gets you hired. It’s the tactic that cuts right to the employer’s needs.
Their needs + your solutions = job offer.

I once had a client who would say to me, “But, Andy, I’m really bad at predicting the future.”
She was referring to her ability to hire the right engineers for her company.
She’d say they sounded great in the interviews.
Then, she’d notice, after they were hired, they didn’t really have the traits she thought they did.
This works both ways.
Job candidates don’t often know what questions to ask potential employers to determine whether they company is a great fit for them.
I guess, technically speaking, asking the questions is the easy part. After all, you can just ask the ones I give you.
The challenge lies in your ability to dissect the employers’ responses.
That’s why, in today’s lesson, I’m going to give the ultimate question to ask an employer to know (yes, know) whether it’s a great fit for you.
Here’s the question…
“What do you love about working here?”
That’s the easy part and you don’t even need to listen to the podcast to know what it is.
The gold isn’t in asking the question.
It’s in knowing what their responses mean—to YOU…

Are job interviews falling out of your pockets?
As in, you’re walking down the street and one falls out of your pocket and you don’t even bother to bend over to pick it up?
If so, have a nice Tuesday and I’ll see you next week!
If not, let’s check a few things.
Consistency?
Elbow grease?
Right targets?
Right people?
Shoving resume into Applicant Trashing System to deafening silence to thinking you stink at life? (This last part is so not true BTW.)
Right roles?
So on and so forth and let’s get you to refocus.

Coming at you today with a more-powerful-than-usual talk about success.
Hard work might get you there. Might.
But, after working with and observing about a bajillion people, I’ve learned why some just seem to have it all and others live in a state of wonderment.
Perspective.
That one thing actually changes the way you approach, well, everything.
Perspective when it comes to gratitude has a way of providing you an overarching head start on life.
There are perspectives, however, that go along with different aspects of your career and life that can trip you up.
Hence, why I needed to cover 7 of them in today’s lesson.
By simply changing your perspective in the way you look at something you can ignite a fire in yourself that wasn’t there a minute ago.
Inside today’s podcast, I hit reasons why you don’t start new challenges or improve your skills.
I covered resources you should never forget whenever you make any decision and just how dang close you are to a person that’ll change your life (even when you think you have no network).
I didn’t stop there!
I went through time wasters that drag you down (they’re not social media) and safety nets and more.
I hope you enjoy it. It’s a doozy!

Are you getting job interviews? Any?
Let me give you a hand.
In today's podcast, I teach the concepts and tactics that get recruiters and hiring officials and whomever else is reviewing your resume to WANT to speak with you.
It’s not just a do-this and do-that lesson.
I go into, as I usually do, the WHYS and WHEREFORES and other important factors that most people don’t think about.
Writing your resume requires sales skills, marketing skills, an advanced understanding of human psychology, and a basic understanding of biochemistry.
Okay. I might have gotten carried away there on the biochemistry thing.
But, you get the idea.
These sales and marketing skills are ones you likely don’t earn a salary for, but make or break you when you’re trying to get a new job and salary!
A little catch-22-ish, eh?

There are a lot, so here’s a breakdown if you need to skip around or comeback to some to prepare for that big interview!

02:28 What are you most proud of in your non-work life
05:44 Tell me about a time when you were criticized for poor job performance.
07:45 What did you dislike most about your most recent boss?
09:01 What does leadership mean to you? How do I answer that in a way that shows my leadership style as well as the impact
12:48 Tell me about a time why you disliked your job?
14:37 Why do want this job?
15:43 How to deal with an interviewer who insists on going through the CV chronologically and keeps asking about things less relevant to the role? (ie why did you do Y after X?

26:55 Tell us of a time you were asked to do something unethical.
28:55 Briefly describe your educational & professional experience? Should I follow same format as "Tell me about yourself" .This is the first opening question for a school district management position.

35:57 How would you deal with criticism/ negative feedback? (NEGATIVE)
37:33 Planning to move closer to home in another state at the end of the year. How do I answer questions about wanting to have a longer transition than two weeks?
39:06 What brands do you think are succeeding in the industry and why? (Question from interviewer. I’ve gotten this question twice and it seems like people want to know competitor knowledge OR my thinking on the brands that I think are making an impact). How do you best prepare for these types of questions that would help me stand out.
41:56 I was asked the number of copiers in the US if a new product. Actual numbers, and he kept interrupting me while trying to answer. Pretty sure he was stress testing me. Any advice on those situations?
43:27 How to answer a technical question during the interview if you don’t know the answer
45:11 I just had someone on a phone interview tell me why other applicants haven't been interested in the position!
45:42 On that work life balance point: can you tell them that in an interview as answer to why us? heard work life balance?

We’re not in a recession at the moment, but I don’t like to be late to the party.
Even if we enter a recession, I don’t want you to panic for a few reasons.
First, panic doesn’t do anyone any good.
Second, you have me.
Third, there are always opportunities for you regardless of whether your world is zigging or zagging.
You just need the right perspective.
How you look at something has almost everything to do with what you see.
For example, here’s how I process the world…
When the market goes up, people need my job searching services to max out their job opps and crank up their pay.
When the market goes down, people need my job searching services to overcome the more difficult challenges in getting hired.
When some industries zig, others zag. At any moment, some people need my “crank up your pay” services and others need my “overcome challenges” services.
I’m ALWAYS needed.
Think I’m unique? Think again.
Same goes for you.
It’s all in how you choose to look at it.
Recently, Rachel, one of my beloved #BOOTCAMPERS, asked me, “Which industries do you predict are most likely to grow during this economic downturn?”
First, I clarified for her, we are not in an economic downturn.
Sure, the news people might be doing their level best to scare you. That’s the thing about “the news.” They only talk about the tiniest of extremes. If it bleeds, it leads. They’re in business (yes, business) to make money, not be a public service that actually delivers “the news.”
They package up the most sensationalized extremes to get your eyes, ears, clicks, etc. You think what you’re seeing is pervasive and normal. Then you become frightened. Then you call your children and tell them to stay in the house.
Andy Sunshine is here to tell, that while you’re allowed to have rough stretches, all is generally wonderful and he wants to make YOUR world a better place.
So, after I clarified that bit of economic reality for Rachel, I gave her the goods on HOW to think through which markets will thrive and HOW to think through your job search should your particular industry take a turn for the worse.
Take in this week’s podcast on How to Job Search During a Recession and learn exactly how to maneuver through any employment environment.

There’s Mount Olympus Mons. The tallest mountain in the solar system. True.
Or, if you haven’t been to Mars to climb that doozie, perhaps you wanna hike up Mount Everest here on Earth. I hear Asia is lovely this time of year.
Honestly, though, I just care about climbing Mount Andy.
Maybe you want to focus on climbing Mount Whatever-Your-Name-Is.
That’s what life is all about. Climbing your personal mountain.
(Wouldn’t it be totally cool if you actually had a mountain named after you?)
Anyhow, since you’re readying my newsletter and I talk about careers, let’s make this message about being the best version of you you can be.
To cap off my solar system metaphor, today’s podcast is about motivating you to reach for the stars.
Let’s get rolling with The Step You Must Take to Maximize Your Career Success!
