I KNOW job searching is tough.

I don’t just teach it, I’ve done it.

I live it with so many of you I feel as if I’m going through it with you.

I thought it was about time I turned the tables and shared with you exactly how I found my last corporate job.

I’m even gonna throw in some bonus pieces about what I did to change my role right after I started.

And, wouldn’t ya know it, all the tactics I used in 2003 way back when dirt was discovered are the exact same ones I teach today.

Here’s a funny. It’s even easier for job seeker’s today than it’s ever been.

That is a capital “T” truth…provided you take the right steps and don’t do something silly like continue to shove your resume into the Applicant Trashing System.

Regaling starts once you fire up the podcast on 9 Steps to Job Search Success | My Personal Story!

Lots of people changing jobs these past few years. Amiright?

But, what about if you’re a beloved, faithful employee?

You know the kind. The ones getting dumped on with extra work when everyone heads for the exits?

Take Catherine for example. She started a new job in March and her direct supervisor quit in June.

She inherited her boss’s responsibilities and wants to know how to get more money if she’s doing more work!

So, I gave her my 5-step process to ask for a raise.

Maybe you can use it too? Or, maybe you can consider this technique when negotiating your new job offer?

Oh, the possibilities of applying this technique are endless!

So, make sure to join me for today’s podcast on How to Ask for a Pay Raise When You Get More Responsibilities!

Right now, it’s hiring silly season for employers and they’re interviewing job candidates like crazy.

Don’t believe any career coach who tells you to slow down your search.

Everyone is SO NOT out on holiday.

Companies are panicking because they’re looking at their 2023 budgets and wondering where on Earth they’re gonna get all the great new employees to work those projects.

I keep telling every employer I know they don’t need to look any further than Andy’s community!

Amiright?

How about today I give you one very sweet video to help you impress the job interviewer over and over and over until your new payday?

I’ll cover how to capture their attention right after you get the obligatory “Hello!” outta your mouth?

And, when you intro yourself “at length!”

And, how about when you answer a “real” job interview question?

And, when YOU ask a question!

And, when you close the deal!

It’s tough to dazzle and dazzle and dazzle, but it won’t be after today.

Is your network helping you?

They want to. More than you know.

They just need a little help from you. It’s true.

I’ve talked long and hard about this throughout the years. Put oh so many videos and podcasts out there on the Internet-z about networking.

Let’s see…

I’ve talked about how to network when you’re job searching, turning applications into networking opps, using networking groups, fixing referral mistakes, and, of course, how to actually build a professional network. I even talked about crafting the perfect networking message. You can check out an entire playlist here if you want.

Today, I’m bringing you a podcast on why it’s so important to be networking right now.

Whether you’re job searching, building your network for the future, or applying to college (yes, this too!), networking works if you do it the right way!

Tell me…is there anything more difficult than taking your “entire” life, your purpose, and your mission and trying to share it…quickly? So someone can remember it?

Challenge Alert: How quickly can you introduce yourself?

Speed matters. Impact matters. And, you need to be memorable!

What if I promised you a great way to introduce yourself at an interview, in an email, on your LinkedIn headline, at a job fair, or at a network event?

Would you take me up on it? Spend a few minutes with me?

You’re in luck.

In today’s podcast, I’ll teach you the external and internal value of having this super tight, powerful pitch, three key components to include, and the exact sentence structure (remember, I’m a pleaser not a teaser).

Many want it. The good life.

The few. They want the great life.

The rest. What’s left. You guessed it. They pursue heights so high that most people dismiss them as unattainable.

Whichever group you’re in, I know you’ll eventually pursue some personal Mount Everest.

You know the one I’m talking about. The one that, somewhere along the climb, makes you question your choices.

Whether it’s a project that takes a week that seems like “the longest week ever” or 20 years to pursue your life’s dream, you’re gonna encounter the “B” word.

If you haven’t encountered the B word, you’re probably settling.

Ouch.

True.

Burnout happens.

Ask anyone who’s pursued a worthy dream.

It’s not if. It’s when.

No shortcut ever gave you what you deserved nor ever will.

The long and worthy road is filled with a few…”Hang on. I gotta catch my breaths.”

I want to help you make sure you get what you deserve, so I’m giving you a bit of my formula on how I manage to “enjoy the doing” during the lengthy pursuits of my biggest goals.

Join me and Celia for How to Avoid Burnout when Working Toward Your Goals!

Ever feel like you’re working hard on your job search, but you’re not getting the output you’d expect?

Or, maybe you’re just not sure how to allocate your time each day to search?

You might have all day to work your job search or only an hour in the evening.

Either way, I’d like to help you get more out of your time and effort.

A few weeks ago, one of my #BOOTCAMPERS Cisco asked…

“Time management and routine when job searching is key as we all know it. Networking, boss hunting, etc. will need to take a significant chunk of our time. [….] How do you recommend we balance our time and energy because I often feel guilty for not spending all my time on “feeding the funnel” versus [other activities] which have actual [long-term] measurable value and deliverables?”

Do you feel this way or wonder this?

Good news.

This week’s podcast is my conversation with Cisco on how I apply this in my life and how I suggest approaching it in your job search.

Enjoy How to Improve Your Job Search Productivity and let’s start getting you more job interviews and offers!

Oct 21, 2022

I have this expression whenever I undertake something new.

Mind you, this is something I say to myself AND I only say it after I’m certain of two things.

First, I’m getting great instruction from someone who actually knows what they’re doing. (You don’t always find the right coach on your first attempt. Unless you found me on your first attempt. Then, lucky you. Ha ha!)

Second, I’ve made a commitment to the effort.

Once those prerequisites are in order, I tell myself…

“Shut up and put in the reps.”

That’s my north-side-of-Chicago-neighborhood-y way of saying, “Don’t question stuff yet. Get in there. Do the work. Build the discipline. Gather the data. Then adjust only after you’ve experienced and know more.”

Until I reach that point, I haven’t earned the right to question anything.

When it comes to job searching, I gave you the put-in-the-reps formula to help you find your dream job the fastest.

I did that all the way back in November 2018 and again in the summer of 2019 and then again in the fall of 2019.

It’s my Job Search Challenge®, which I designed so you would know which activities within the job search actually lead to the results you want.

As a quick recap, I distilled it down into manageable activities:

  1. Target 3 companies (potential employers) each day.
  2. Identify one individual in those 3 companies each day (e.g., boss, senior person, HR, recruiter, teammate).
  3. Send a thoughtful message in the direction of, if not directly to, those individuals each day.

Easy breezy.

A put-in-the-reps kinda formula that is simple enough to understand with a narrow-enough focus to keep you concentrated on the right activities. Plus, you can easily gather insight and data to assess what is working or make the proper adjustments.

It works.

Let’s say you believe me…

It’s 2022. You might think we live in a totally different world now.

But, 99.9% of what I teach you will never go out of style.

Even so, I’m always looking to amp up my game and I want you to amp up yours.

So, I’ve created a next-level-job-search-challenge that goes beyond the shut-up-and-put-in-the-reps techniques.

It’s my hope this advanced approach will go beyond helping you achieve the results you want.

I want you to not only experience the job search, but also gain all the benefits this experience can offer you.

Don’t just job search. That might lead to just a job.

Truly experience what you’re doing so that experience and the benefits you receive because of it continue to pay you back for the rest of your life.

Make sure before you take in this episode today you listen to the Job Search Challenge® Put-In-The-Reps Version (Part 1).

And, of course, enjoy the souped-up Job Search Challenge® | Advanced Level Tactics Version (Part 2).

Go get ‘em.

Job searching is hard, like, really hard. It’s even hard in the best of times, which we have now seasonally entered.

November through February.

That’s right. Start licking your chops. It’s officially open season on all things finding-your-dream-job related.

Where I live the weather stinks this time of year, but finding that sweet job in never easier than in these months.

Wait. Whaaaa? Doesn’t feel like it?

Fact of the matter is, it makes no difference what the employment market looks like, what month it is, or what holiday the world is or isn’t celebrating if you don’t know HOW to job search!

Enter my—proven—job search challenge®.

I’m in the mood to make some promises so let’s do just that.

If…

…you do what I challenge you to do and simply follow the steps (heck, just go through the motions but you get bonus points for positive energy), you will get traction.

Bold words. I know.

How do I know?

Because it’s been proven over and over and over again by people just like you.

Yes. The ones that are, uh, in my age group.

Yes. The ones that live in rural places without all those booming companies.

Yes. The ones without all the “required” skills on those ridiculous job descriptions.

Yes. Those returning to the workforce after being away because [plop in any reason here].

Yes. Those people who [insert whatever you can think of here] too!

What’s more, if you take the challenge, you will even surprise yourself at how easy it becomes to email total strangers. (Don’t get me started on how I think strangers are just friends I haven’t met yet.)

You’ll become more consistent, confident, care-free, and a whole bunch of other cool “C” words.

Gimme 36 minutes for today’s podcast on a Job Search Challenge® That Gets Interviews!

Here’s another promise.

It’ll be worth it.

I have a saying. It’s one of my Today’s Lines to Live By®, which you can catch daily on my Instagram.

“Short-timers focus on wins. Long-timers focus on plans.”

That’s true.

Short-timers focus on wins, which usually causes them to lose. And quit. That’s how they become short-timers. Get it?

Long-timers focus on the plan and the planning process. And, they obsess over abilities they need to grow to add cool checkmarks next to the stuff on their plans.

This, in turn, causes them to grow faster, live happier existences, and, oddly, win more. Or, at least win bigger.

Build strategy. Add plans. Work the plans. Stay the course.

There is one ingredient in working a top-1-%-er plan I consider the secret to the sauce.

Catch it in the week’s podcast on The Top 1% at Their Job Focus on This.

I wish I could negotiate your salary for you. I truly do.

Actually, I wish I could be with you every step of the entire recruitment process because, technically, you’re negotiating from the moment you send in your resume and cover letter.

Since it isn’t very likely your future employer will let your fun, affable career coach accompany you through the process, I thought it’d be a good idea to record this week’s podcast for you so you can negotiate the heck outta your next job offer!

Inside, I hit over a dozen tips, tricks, tactics, and secrets related to the Dos and Don’ts of building your salary negotiation power.

I cover BEFORE the process starts, continue to when you actually start, during the job interviews, at the true negotiation, and, of course, round it out with your inevitable counteroffer on your way to the bank.

Enjoy today’s podcast on Salary Negotiation Tactics That Get You Paid More and think of me with every automatic deposit!

There are so many reasons we don’t have what we want.

Usually, not always, they’re surmountable.

Some of the time, it’s in our head.

Much of the time, we simply don’t want to make the, uh, time.

But, I’ll step out on a limb here. In virtually all of the cases, you have the ability.

In fact, I’ve never met anyone whose effort couldn’t beat their talent level.

Change is never function of ability. It’s a function of desire.

If you have the aspiration, you can fulfill it with enough hard work—and time.

Over the years, I’ve covered how to overcome many of the mental and tactical roadblocks.

I thought it was about time to mesh together a medley of some of my motivational favs.

Inside this week’s podcast are 11 separate lessons to inspire you to chase—and accomplish—your dreams. (Breakdown of times is in the PS.)

Join me for today’s podcast Motivation Medley to Get What You Want to get charged and in motion!

For today’s podcast, here’s a list to help you revisit you favorite messages whenever you need them.

00:00 Don’t be afraid to start small.
03:16 Wisdom is expensive, perspective is cheap.
05:25 Change is never a function of ability.
06:28 Realize you’re always a work in progress.
11:45 Why you undervalue yourself and how to stop.
15:33 How to get over procrastination (AKA Real life isn't Microsoft Office).
17:40 Smart goals are dumb.
20:27 Short-timers focus on wins, long-timers study their plans.
24:08 What it takes to get what you want.
31:54 Adopting the mindset to be a zebra in life.
35:27 Everything you do matters because we are all connected.

Do you wonder what employers want to know about you? That answer is actually quite simple.

But, making sure you know what that is and delivering the message so they receive it with zero distortion?

Well, that’s the stuff legends are made of.

Or, members of Andy’s community! At least after today.

It’s not just here’s who I am, here’s what I do, here’s how I can help you. Yawn.

Getting hired is about so much more than having a shiny resume with all the right keywords.

It’s about so much more than telling great interview stories.

There are stars that must align.

There is a level of congruence that begins with what you’ve accomplished historically, what you want presently, how you package it up in your marketing messages so it hits what the employer needs, and how you drive home your worth during the job interviews.

Job seekers screw this up because there’s often something broken along this chain.

In today’s podcast on How to Show Your Value to Employers so You Get Hired, I teach how to get rid of any weak links and hit the bulls-eye on exactly what employers want to know!

Empathy doesn’t sound sexy, but it’s like still water that runs deep. It’s like roots of giant trees you wonder how can possibly stand so tall. And, yet, so few people are actually empathetic. Why?

Because you have never, not ever, had an experience that you were not at the absolute center of. Your thoughts and feelings about those experiences are automatic.

My experience of the same scene needs to be communicated to you. My feelings need to be communicated to you. And even if I did that perfectly, you still wouldn’t be able to know exactly how I feel.

That’s because my current experience (with you) is nuanced by all the other experiences I’ve had. Which, by the way, you haven’t had!

So, how is one to become a better person, better communicator, better at understanding their friends, partners, and spouses.

How does one become better at providing service or anticipating reactions or so many other desired life and business skills?

You need to stop being automatic.

The formula is not hard. The practice and execution are excruciatingly hard.

So hard that so many give up so easily. So? So, don’t let that be you!

Join me for today’s podcast to learn a simple, yet very effective formula for developing empathy!

Interviews are complicated. They get further complicated when interviewers ask bad questions which in turn gets exacerbated by job candidates trying to regurgitate interview speak.

It’s really a stitch except for the part about you needing the new job.

Enter your Coach to reassure you we can simplify things.

The first thing you’ll need to do is listen to this week’s podcast as I break down the 11 most common types of interview questions and how to answer them.

Then you’ll know how to answer everything from the lazy questions to the silly questions to the questions they ask that make you go all Nostradamus.

I even threw in the regrettables, the oh-so-ugh Sophie’s choice, and a few of my other favs (Negative Nelly, deal breakers, etc.).

They’re all in there. 17 minutes. Easy peasy.

Money. Actually, more like money you’ll get in the future. Money is funny that way, especially when the money we’re talking about is your salary.

We negotiate like heck for what we’ll be paid in the future. So, why is it that so many employees try to argue for a new salary based on what they did in the past? Wasn’t that so yesteryear? Wasn’t that so your last job?

Past performance is not an indicator of future performance when I change the variables.

Here’s a funny.

I earned a nice living as an executive recruiter.

Then, I became a career coach.

And, well, as smart as that rich executive recruiter guy was, that new career coach didn’t know $h!t about email marketing, YouTube-ing, podcasting, and TikTok-ing (still don’t).

I could have argued with myself and said, “Self. You’ve been awesome at recruitment, sales, serving your clients, and everything else that goes with it. I’m sure you know your stuff and can explain it to all those people who live in Germany, Canada, and California. Here’s a big fat raise.”

Then, I would have fired myself in the first year. Splat.

Career coach guy didn’t only not earn more money. He didn’t even earn less money. He actually lost money. Ouch! (I’ll stop the 3rd-person thing now.)

You might be thinking, well, you were making a career change, so that makes sense.

Okay, but are you getting a new payday because you’re doing the same job?

Why would an employer give you more money for doing the same thing? Inflation? Don’t think so

Oh, you got a fat promotion? Or more responsibilities? Ah.

Hell to the YEAH!

So, that means you’re in a new position?

How can I, your boss, know for certain you’ll do well? (Remember, past performance is a funny thing and we have some new variables here.)

I think you get the gist by now.

Good news is I won’t be the one you’ll need to negotiate your raise with.

Better news is I’m giving you the what-to-do to earn more money—in the future.

Think of me with every paycheck that is auto-deposited into your bank account.

Listen and cha-ching.

If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me a question about working with executive recruiters, I probably wouldn’t be typing this to you right now. The good news is I don’t have those nickels, which means I get to keep living my real dream of helping you with your career.

Part of helping you with your career means dissecting these thorny people (oooops, meant thorny issues) for you.

In today’s podcast, I open up the entire kimono, which apparently takes exactly 46 minutes and 50 seconds, on working with third-party recruiters and executive search firms.

You’ll get the myths and mistakes that accompany these often-misunderstood individuals and companies.

As a very long-in-the-tooth recruiter myself (see, we’re not all bad), I give you the insider’s view of what recruiters do and how to leverage them for the wonderful assets they can be (no, seriously).

It’s a don’t-miss for anyone who wants to expand their network with and get help from people who are doorways into the employment market.

I hope you carve out the time for A Job Seeker's Guide to Working with Executive Recruiters and 3rd Party Search Firms. It’ll be worth it!

Do you care to be great? It’s easier now more than ever to be awesome at your craft. It’s also more important now than ever that you ARE an ace.

Why? The world has changed and employers have changed with it.

There are so many factors that have altered the landscape of the employer-employee relationship.

The number of opportunities in the workforce are only the beginning. This has created a lack of loyalty on the employee’s part. Employers, in turn, have mirrored the behavior. (Let’s not argue which is the chicken or egg.)

Remote working means you’re building less camaraderie or affinity to each other. That means, unfortunately, employers are becoming less patient with employees who are not producing.

For these and so many other reasons, it's more important now than ever to be the star employee—the one they cannot live without.

Let’s make that happen today!

Is it possible your natural inclinations about corporate recruiters are all wrong? Would you believe me if I told you they were? Indulge me.

I’ve only worked directly with a few hundred of them. Only surveyed more than 20,000 over the last 16 years. Would you spend some time with me if I could show you why they want to be your advocate?

See, as a job seeker, you help them take one giant step toward fulfilling their goals—filling their open positions!

Most job candidates consider recruiters gatekeepers. That’s certainly one way of looking at it.

But, recognize they want to fill those positions...as quickly as possible.

These “gatekeepers” are more like doormen trying to hold the gates open for you. They might even carry your brief bag if you let them (no tip required).

They want to move you forward in the process. They want their company to hire you as quickly as possible because this makes them look good!

Want to know how you can help recruiters do that?

Want to know what’s happening behind the scenes so you can turn these “misunderstood foes” into your greatest allies?

Join me for this week’s podcast on Everything You Need to Know About Working with Corporate Recruiters!

Fear is learned. For proof, look at a child. Don’tcha just wish you could get it back?

True story alert.

When I was not quite a teenager, I used to head to Rehm Park in Oak Park, IL. They had this amazing platform, which they built the year I was born (another true fact, coincidentally).

The first platform was 10 meters, but that wouldn’t have been reckless enough, so I had to head to the top (~25 meters).

Now, when I was 12, I didn’t know my 100 lb. body would be traveling at 22.14 meters/second and it would only take me 2.26 seconds (give or take a hundredth) to hit the water.

All I knew was when I jumped off, I was moving toward the water so fast that my heart felt like it was pushing at the top of my head.

It wasn’t until I was in college and had advanced physics as an electrical engineering student where I learned these petrifying numbers based on velocity and energy at impact and a bunch of other stuff I’ve thankfully forgotten.

12-year-old Andy: “Let’s do it again! Let’s do it again!”

19-year-old Andy: “Whoa. I was going how fast? Is that even safe?”

56-year-old Andy: “Was I outta my mind? I’ll never do something that stupid again!” (Of course I will. It’ll just be something a different-kinda stupid.)

How’s this relate to you? What are you afraid of right now? Why?

Unless you’re running from a big bad Grizzly Bear, I’m thinkin’ you shouldn’t have any fear.

Or, if you do have fear (let’s call it the good kind), you should use it as a sign that you are on the right track. You just need to embrace it and push through.

Gimme 10 minutes. Let me help you.

If nothing else, you’ll hear exactly what I sound like after a really-quick 5-mile run.

You just couldn’t do it. You just couldn’t hold back your expected salary like Coach wanted you to. You caved. Dang.

Well, the bad news is at some point in the interview process—whether in the beginning, middle, or right before the new employer wanted to extend a job offer—you slipped and blurted out, well, anything!

The good news for you is I’m your Coach and I not only love you, but have a trick in my bag for everything.

I mean e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g!

I’m like your personal, little, Swiss-Army knife for all things career-related.

Here’s what I want you to do if you gave an expected salary and want to negotiate for more even IF they gave you what you asked for…

We’ve all been there. We need someone to do something we need them to do. That is, they don’t need to do it. We need them to do it for us.

It might be for us individually or for the greater good.

It makes no diff what your title is, what your job is, whether you’re the boss, or, more likely, not the boss. You’ll probably find yourself in this situation, well, for the rest of your work life.

Matrixed organization anyone? No direct reports? Help from a business partner? Someone who just happens to work for one of the other seven groups contributing to this massive project?

Any which way, you need to persuade them. Good news.

I’ve got a 9-minuter on exactly how to do this.

Join me today for a podcast on how to influence without authority!

All that money. I’m just gonna take it. Not. So. Fast.

Today, we are the sum total of the decisions of our yesterdays.

Don’t get technical on me. Yes. I know some were born with a silver spoon. Others came from the school of hard knocks. Whoever you are. Wherever you started. You are a byproduct of your decisions.

The longer term you think, the better short-term decisions you make that eventually pile up to a high mountain of long-term goodness!

Enter the job offer to test your mettle.

Jim, a member of our beloved community, asked me during one of my Live Office Hours shows how to determine whether a job offer was in alignment with his career goals.

I squealed with glee at this question because it gave me a chance to give you a formula to avoid one of the biggest mistakes many professionals make.

Here’s the long-term, thoughtful approach in a short-term-9-minute package on how to evaluate a job offer!

How’s your personal brand? Didn’t know you had one? Don’t think you need one?

Every working professional has one whether they want one or not! In fact, here’s a scary little, uh, fact…not only do 70% of employers check your digital footprint as you are being recruited, but 43% of employers also check up on their employees after they’ve been hired! And, that’s just the online part.

Employed already? Then your reputation needs to be managed as you progress inside—and eventually outside—your current company.

Today, I’ve got you covered with a full-blown podcast on exactly how to build your personal brand!

Confused about asking questions in a job interview?

Thinking, “But, Coach, they only gave me 3 minutes to ask my questions in the interview. What’s up with that?” (So what.)

“Ok. This time they gave me 10 minutes. How many questions should I ask?” (Talk fast.)

“How do I not incriminate myself or burst my awesomeness?” (You won’t.)

“How will I know if they’re lying to me?” (They don’t.)

So on. So forth. So confusing! I get it.

The only difference between you and me, beside the fact I have four crazy dachshunds that boss me around all day, is I’ve conducted or witnessed or debriefed more than 20,000 job interviews.

Yes, I’m old. But, I’m your old fogie. And, I have the goods.

And I ain’t afraid to share them with you.

Join me for today’s podcast on exactly how to approach asking your questions in a job interview!
